The Goonies  Konami1986***
[17]***This was the second 8-bit Nintendo game based on a movie. And this on was actually created to be based on a movie (not a re-branded version of another game). Quite odd, its based on a North American movie and yet never released outside of Japan for the NES.***The Goonies is a maze-like platform game based on the movie of same name. Your task is to find and rescue all your friends, who are behind closed doors which have to be opened with bombs that can be found from killed enemies. You also have to find key parts, which are also behind said doors. The game's difficulty level is low. Once you know your way through the rather small mazes the game offers not much challenge. Nevertheless it is maybe the second-best platform game for the NES at the time of its release (only beaten by Super Mario Bros.), due to its good playability and controls. Music is also well done when compared to the usual high-pitched noisy music of other early NES/Famicom games.***Released only in Japan, Americans had to settle for the playchoice-10 or Vs. System arcade versions

Zelda II: The Adventure of Link  Nintendo1988There is an extremely obscure bug in the game whereby the attack value which normally maxes out at 8 can be set to something else. "0" and "F" have been seen. Both of these, with two exceptions, will allow Link to kill any enemy with one hit. The exceptions are the Thunderbird boss which requires one hit but the thunder spell must still be cast on it first. Shadow Link still requires 8 hits. No one has discovered what triggers this bug. It can be saved and in fact cannot be undone from a saved game.***

[37]***Link returns to Hyrule to search for the Triforce and to awaken Zelda from an endless sleep. Embark on a quest to find the Triforce of Courage and save Hyrule from ruin. Learn magic spells, talk to people in towns to get clues, collect items to increase your power and explore six palaces where the underlings of the evil Ganon await you.

This sequel to the Adventure classic uses a side-scrolling visual engine unique to the series for more technical combat, and features more in-depth world roaming as Link encounters townsfolk while on his quest.***A year and a half after the original Famicom Disk System release in Japan, Nintendo brought this game to the west on cartridge. Desptite being a quite good game, Zelda 2 is my least favorite of the classic Zelda games. It surely explored a new gameplay style but the levels were too difficult and I didn't like the random enemy encounter battle system (the similar "[game=#7581]The Battle of Olympus[/game]" would prove to be much better balanced in my eyes). Graphics and sound are very good for its time. Nintendo understood how to program their 8-bit console.

[27]***This game is notable for being nothing like the arcade game of the same name. This was quite a disappointment to many fans. A version of the arcade game would follow with Teenaged Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Arcade game.

Also notable for being difficult. In particular, a long gap near then end of the game requires a jump of the maximum possible distance (pixel precise) that many players conclude is impossible until seeking outside help.
[Zerothis]***Cowabunga! Players take control of the turtles in a half shell and rescue reporter April O'Neil from the clutches of the evil Shredder. Battle against the Foot Ninja Clan as Leonardo, Michaelangelo, Donatello and Raphael with their trademark weapons and ninja abilities. Search through five stages and dozens of areas throughout the New York City sewers, rooftops and ultimately Shredder's Technodrome to save April. Players must scarf down some pizza to keep up their energy, as they'll need it to defeat Shredder. Turtle Power!

Back to the Future LJN (Beam International)1989***
[90]***You are Marty McFly, just a typical senior at Hill Valley High. But after getting behind the wheel of a nuclear-powered sports car turned time machine, you find yourself in the year 1955 where you've accidentally tampered with history. Now it must be corrected. You must somehow make sure that teenagers Lorraine Baines and George McFly (the two kids that will eventually grow up to become your parents) fall in love before the photo of your family fades away and you're left with nothing to come home to. It won't be easy. You'll have to protect George from Biff and his gang of bullies while doing your best to keep them from beating you up instead. To complicate things, Lorraine has a crush on you, so you'll have to dodge her advances while trying to figure out a way to get George and her to kiss at the school dance. Time is wasting and even if you manage to put all of the pieces in place, there is still no guarantee that you'll get back. It will all come down to one brief moment in time when the past, present and future all meet.***The game was released 1989-09-01. The "1985" on the title screen refers to the Trademarked movie title. [90]***Yo! After being treated like garbage by the Ninja Turtles, Shredder has trained a new, more merciless breed of Foot Soldiers to inflict his revenge: A clan of over 700 Taekwondo turtle terminators who have once again captured April O'Neil to use as turtle bait. Fortunately you don't have to face these freaks of torture alone. For the first time ever, two dudes or dudettes can join forces and double-team Shredder, kicking shell while covering each others tails. But to survive you've gotta fight through 8 action-packed arcade levels, including Vinnie's Valet "Stalking" Lot and the Soho Sewer System, plus two new never-before-seen shell-squashing stages! Each of these deathtraps is reinforced by lethal electro zappers, laser beams, freezer burners or enemies such as Scorpion Robots, Stone Warriors and Baxter Stockman. Shredder has also hired the all-powerful Tora and Shogun, two alien bounty hunters who have never known defeat. Even though Master Splinter has prepared the turtles well for battle, teaching them radical new attack moves, it doesn't mean this war to save April and turtlekind will be a piece of cake or even a slice of pizza. Because with the forces of revenge on his side and the bounty boys in town, it's payback time for Shredder!***

[27]***Pretty decent port (for an NES) of a classic arcade game. The graphics are far inferior to the arcade version, of course, but also the levels are slightly different than the arcade version. This game is just called Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in Japan.

Happily Ever After  Sofel1991This side-view action-adventure platformer with overworld (like Zelda II) was in the works to be released along with the Filmation movie of the same title. Intended to be an unofficial sequel to Disney's version of Snow White. Snow White and Prince Charming are getting married. But The Wicked Queen's brother wants revenge and kidnaps Prince Charming before he can say "I do". Snow White joins up the 7 Dwarfelles (cousins of the 7 Dwarfs), Muddy, Sunburn, Blossom, Marina, Critterina, Moonbeam, and Thunderella, to find and rescue Prince Charming.***Like the movie, the original title was Snow White in the Land of Doom. But the titles were changed and the release of the film delayed when Disney sued Filmation for infringing on 'their' characters. The Land of Doom title for the game was never used publicly though it was used for the movie. The movie was possible ready for its originally announced release date in 1990 but, obviously, was delayed. The next release date of 1991-07-25 (movie and NES game) failed to be meet as well. The movie was finally released 1993-05-28. The game could have easily been completed long before this time, but by then the NES market, plus the intended target of female children who play NES games, was not going to be making amounting to a minimal number of sales to justify the release. But by then, another company had started work on an Super Nintendo game based on the movie. The Super Nintendo version of Happily Ever After merely a simple platformer. labelimagesubject
